The Amateur’s Introduction to White Wine
White wine is the lighter, less complex opposite number of red wine, though it is no less dignified as a drink. White wine is made from the grape essence and skin of grapes of a green, gold and yellow shade, or from the juices alone of specific red grapes. The liquid that produces white wine is fermented for anywhere from three days to three weeks. Fermentation can be suppressed midway to make sparkling or sweet wine, or brought to its final stage to make a dry wine. The wine is aged then, for a certain time, and can be mixed with other wines to produce differing wine variations. Lastly, chemicals are added to the wine to dispel proteins and other causes of astringency.
White wines are normally drunk with light foods, such as appetizers or small dinners. Compared to red wines, white wines are better suited for these events, because of their innate nature. shellfish, poultry and other light foods work well with white wines, though this is more of a rule of thumb than an absolute law. White wines are most appropriately served at temperatures approaching 45 to 50 degrees F, which is relatively chilly. They are also commonly drunk in slender receptacles, with a sharper taper on top, to concentrate the fragrance of the white wine.

Chardonnay is a flexible and celebrated grape that produces brilliant white wines. Chardonnay white wines are quite rich and sport medium to high levels of acidity. Pinot Grigio is Italy’s most renowned white wine, also cultivated in France, and called Pinot Gris when harvested in the United States. Riesling is a fantastic white wine from Germany that has developed some level of infamy because of the spreading of lackluster wines being passed off as Rieslings.
