Under The Volcano On Lanzarote Island

Despite the recent volcanic activity in Iceland and the chaos this caused for countless travellers plenty of tourists will still be heading for similar hot spots around the globe during 2010.  With destinations such as Lanzarote still very popular.  This little island still bears the very visible marks of huge eruptions that took place some 250 years ago.  With the interior left resembling the stage set of a science fiction movie.

This volcanic activity lasted for no less than six years – with a repeat performance in 1824.  And the impact of these eruptions irrevocably altered the terrain of much of the island.  Leaving an area of around 200km square devoid of vegetation and resembling something out of a sci-fi film.  Little wonder then that Lanzarote has been used many times as a location by movie makers since the 1960´s.

Visitors today can rest easy though as none of the 300 plus volcanoes here are still active.  In fact this whole region is now the most visited attraction on Lanzarote.  But this unique island has much more to offer than just lava fields and spent peaks alone.  As there are loads of beautiful beaches and fascinating spots to tour and explore.

Lanzarote Villas – Hotels And Apartments

There is an excellent choice of accommodation on the island ranging from self catering apartments for the budget conscious, through to hotels and private villas. The biggest question on most peoples lips however is where to stay.

There are three main resorts on the island and during the winter months villas in Playa Blanca are very popular.  As these are located at the foot of the island so ensuring better weather at that time of the year.  Tourists seeking more in the way of nightlife though tend to book villas in Puerto del Carmen instead, as there are more bars and restaurants there.  

The third largest resort of Costa Teguise is located to the north of Arrecife airport on the south east coastline.  It was created around 35 years ago with the help of César Manrique, a popular local artist who had a hand in the creation of many of Lanzarote´s best known attractions too.  He developed plans for an upmarket resort which is still anchored today by the five star Gran Melia Salinas hotel.  Which is still one of the best hotels in Lanzarote and where guests can view some of his original canvasses adorning the walls of the public spaces.

As well as a reliable tourist industry and great weather Lanzarote also offers holidaymakers plenty of attractions and activities.  Factors which have helped to maintain the island’s ongoing popularity.  These include an array of natural wonders, such as the verdant Valley of 1000 Palms in the north of the island.  And the number one tourist attraction of the Timanfaya Volcano Park – where visitors can gaze in awe at over 300 now dormant peaks.  There are also close to 100 beaches to explore along with some very pretty little villages such as Haria and Yaiza.
