My cat scratches herself and shakes her head a lot does anyone know why she does this?
She is in door and has all her shots to date. I am concerned can you help me?
As others have said, it could be ear mites. But it could also be an ear infection. It could also be the sign of something worse.
In recent years, I’ve had two cats with similar symptoms but entirely different outcomes. All of my cats are always indoor cats.
Several years ago, my most precious baby Sherman started acting weird(er). He looked like he had a constant itchy ear. He was also quite “tippy”. I took him to the vet, and they treated him for an inner ear infection (as they found no signs of ear mites). His condition worsened, and inevitibly, he had to be put down several months later. We found out that he was having strokes.
Most recently, my tiny cat, Simon (about 18lbs tiny), has always had a dirty left ear. We took him to the vet, and they said it’s not mites; it’s a bacterial infection. I’ve honestly been fighting this on and off for the last 2 years. I have to clean his ear with a special wash from the vet and put in antibiotic drops twice a day. It clears up for a while, but it seems to keep coming back (grrrrr). At the moment, it’s okay. He’s due for his yearly checkup, and we’re going to try to address it again.
I would suggest taking her to the vet and having them check her ears thoroughly. Hopefully, it’s just something benign. I find that it’s better to find out now than wait until it gets worse. Inner ear infections can get VERY bad and can cause a lot of problems if not caught.
