Head Coins

What a Beginning Collector Can Look For When Starting a Coin Collection.
The introduction of the internet has completely turned around the way people find things to collect. It is surprising to many novice collectors how many expensive and rare coins are still in loose circulation.
The “wheat penny”, which was a successor to the popular indian head penny, is a good starting point for a new collectors. The wheat penny is named for it’s design, which includes a pair of wheat stalk bundles on the back side of the coin, and a picture of Lincoln on the front side.
A particularly interesting U.S. coin is the zinc/steel penny produced during the Second World War. Because of a copper shortage during the war, the U.S. Mint produced pennies made from steel, then coated with zinc to prevent any rusting. Made in 1943, these coins are valuable both for their age and their rarity. You will be able to tell the difference easily by their light bluish-gray tint and the distinctive sound they make when struck.
Many Lincoln wheat cents have the initials VDB of the designer (Victor David Brenner) on the reverse. Most coins found were minted at the Philadelphia Mint which was the largest at the time, however, the coins that you come across that were minted at a location other than Philadelphia are more rare and therefore more valuable. Some of these pennies fetch up to $700 on the market – not too shabby for a single penny! Many are worth $15, which is still a very nice profit for a penny.
You can look for pennies, silver dimes, quarters and dollars in perfectly ordinary places. With the growing popularity of coin counting machines, these coins are often passed from bank to bank unnoticed. You should always look at the change you get if you are a collector, you never know what you may find.
It takes but a second to examine a coin; if you know what to look for, you can find VDB pennies, dimes minted before 1964, and new state quarters. You may also find Eisenhower silver dollars.
The series of state quarters began production in 1999 and five new quarters are introduced each year. New quarters are issued ever ten weeks or so; the program is scheduled to end in 2009. Each state quarter features a different design on the reverse.
The state quarters created in previous years of the program are no longer being produced, so they are sure to increase in value over time. The value of many of these quarters is already $2, which should increase since a coins circulation lasts about 30 years on average. Start collecting these today and you could find yourself with a very valuable collection in a few decades time.
Coin collecting is a hobby which involves long term planning. Your collection will grow more valuable with time; even a common coin from today could become a valuable collectible later in its life.
