Why Europeans Are Heading To Wales
Tourism in the ‘valleys’ does appear to be thriving, forgetting old rivalries. It could be a mixture of things like the nightmare of airports, the current value of the pound or the recession. People have probably realised that there is potential in visiting somewhere closer to home. Good news for the likes of Wales and Scotland, bad news for Spain and Portugal.
In fact the value of the pound has made it far more attractive for visitors from the continent. This has obviously been noticed by the Wales Tourist Board, who by appointing an agency to look into this, recognise the potential.
The European Commission believes that 48 per cent of people (an increase of 5 per cent on last year) will choose to holiday in their own country. To me it would appear that there is a growing trend. If you live in England, then you tend to view a visit to Wales or Scotland as being a ‘local’ trip. It is not because we feel we should laud it over them, but more a similarity of our cultures. It also helps to have the same currency and a physical link, unhindered by water. Whilst being an English man through and through, I still consider holidays in Wales as a totally different event.
I am ashamed to say that my own experiences have been minimal, and generally limited to the north of Wales. One of the best things to do in Wales would be a visit to the mountainous region of the Snowdonia National Park. I love the mountain region, and would naturally choose holiday cottages in Wales as my preferred accommodation. I stayed a long time ago in a lovely cottage, near to the beautiful Llanberis pass. From there it was possible to see the rugged peaks of Snowdon, and the other beautiful scenery such as the twin lakes of Llyn Padarn and Llyn Peris. You can catch a train from Llanberis or walk one of the countless routes to the top at over 3,000 feet.
