How to Help Your Child Get Good Grades

I have been blessed with children that have not had learning disabilities and have done very well in school. I think most of it has been because of their intellectual capacity, but I also like to think the home & family environment we have fostered has played a part in it too.  This article will set forth some ideas parent(s) can include as a part of their home environment that will facilitate the academic success of their children.

1)  Act motivated about school and constantly mention that education is important to their over-all success in life.  Tell them your education story. It may be one that you wished you had gotten more education and have had to sacrifice because of your lack of education, or it may be an education story you’re proud of and achieved successes associated with your degree(s).

2) Set the example and let them know that what they are involved in at school is important to you, too. I like to read some of the writings, books, and poems they have to read for English or other classes, so I can discuss it with them.  They feel I care about what they are doing and it gives them a great opportunity to recall facts and receive my insight for tests and papers they may be required to do.

 3)  Provide a structured environment. This is a concept that seems very hard for some families to understand the necessity of, but it is absolutely critical and is practiced in all homes I have heard of where children have no intellectual handicaps and get high grades.

This is such an important area, that I will elaborate more in a follow up article on this area.  There must be curfews and required time for homework and lights out. Homework comes before social activities during the school week.

 4) Set up a family routine such as providing a nutritious breakfast, arrange for a healthy lunch, and eating dinner at around the same time each early evening. This enables your children to plan their time and they will have proper health to feel good and stay focused on their homework. For elementary and middle school children, there needs to be a small window of time for lights out, such as 8:30 – 9:00 PM, or earlier depending on the age of elementary school children.

5) Set a CONSERVATIVE curfew on school nights.  A lot of problems in school could be averted if the students were receiving enough rest the night before school.  This allows growing children to be rested and healthy and to feel like concentrating on their studies.

6) Encourage balance in their life. If they are spending endless hours on sports, there is a small chance they will be doing well in academic areas. It is very probable that most children are not going to major league sports or participating in the Olympics, so it’s usually best to convince them to maintain a balance of academics, sports, and personal time.

7) Recognition. Praise your children when they are getting good grades.  Attend award recognition programs and encourage them to keep up the good work.

Setting your children up for academic success is crucial in today’s world. They may complain and give resistance during their school years, but they will thank you many times over beginning their senior year when they realize what they have accomplished.  As they are accepted to college and even receive scholarships, they will be very happy that Mom / Dad set up the plan and followed it for their success.
