Its amazing isn’t it???

Everyone wonders why our society is obese. My thougth is this: (now think about this for a minute)
*a six pack (2 per pack) of generic swiss cakes is approx $.99
this can give a sugar rush to 6-12 kids
*now- 6-12 apples ( a healthier snack) can cost from $4.00 -$7.00 at any given time.

*generic butter (small tub) – high in fat and who knows what else is appox. $1.10
*the cost of the promise brand a healthier butter & 1/2 the size of the above tub) is $3.68

*generic brand packaged luch meat with all of the preservatives and addatives to keep it fresh & i believe the pkg size is 2 lbs, can cost about $2.69-$3.25
* now go to the local deli and to get fresh sliced meat ( the healthier luch meat) will cost anywhere from $3.00-$5.00 per pound

with just those examples: how does the gov think that people on a buget can affrord to feed their families “healthier” to slow down the obesity rate?????

What’s your opinion?

You are absolutely correct! I’ve studied this on my own as well as I’ve thought about the same topic and looked at what I purchase at the store.

Purchasing healthy items always cost more. Fresh fruit and vegetables add up and they also perish faster (more waste, faster purchase times). Bottled water costs more than a 12 pack of soda. Leaner cuts of meat, obviously due to its rarity and more processing (cutting out the fat) always costs more.

The fact is people on a limited budget can only afford items which are processed in large quantities at a factory. Those items have to be filled with high amounts of sugar, fat, etc… to maintain freshness and flavor. More processing out of items requires more machines and more technology, which ups the price/item ratio.

But, another way to look at it is you are more likely to have vanity and be overly concerned about your body image if you have a little more money. It isn’t the rule, it is just more common than not. With more money comes calling the companies with the latest technological revolutions in food production. They know they can entice someone with a bit more money to buy healthier stuff because they can afford it and are more concerned about their image. Obviously obesity is not limited to the poorer of the population…but at that point, it is gluttony or self control.

I’m sure some of my points are flawed a bit but overall, I agree that someone on a budget will have a much more difficult time purchasing healty options. Look at the “healthy” options on any fast food menu. They are generally higher priced and provide less food than the other options. This is of course ignoring the fact that the less food in the healthy options is probably enough or more than enough to satisfy your caloric intake….
