Is money being introduced good for cricket?
With the amount of money being introduced now at international level from the ipl and the stanford guy, more money is going to be circulated into cricket.
My take on it is it’s bad. SOme of the players when they become decent enough to endorse things their performance goes down, and the hunger to play is no longer there. Of course with some players it still stays,e.g Tendulkar, Jayasuria, Murli etc
If it’s spent properly, on the grass roots levels of cricket, then it’ll be a good thing. But that’s not what seems to be coming out – it’s all for the international players personal gain. Some of these players already earn a lot, England’s centrally contracted players especially.
There are so many Twenty20 competitions that the players can earn money, the IPL, the “rebel” ICL (which some players, like Shane Bond, have given up their international career in order to make a living), Standford T20. Even the Twenty20 Cup, set up to draw crowds into county cricket has become a monopoly. The Twenty20 franchise (as it seems to be known) has gone into overkill since the World Cup. In England, the Pro40 format is being dropped for another Twenty20 “Premier League”.
The Twenty20 Cup in England is now worth millions of pounds to the county who wins it. More incentive is being put on shorter forms of cricket than the real prize, Test cricket.
It may well soon get to the stage where players are turning their backs on their countries/counties in order to satisfy their own money needs.
