Winter Lawns And Lawn Care In Autumn
Lawn care that is specifically designed for winter ideally needs to begin as soon as the summer is over and autumn’s leaves begin to fall. This is a time of year when the days become a lot shorter quite quickly following the long, lighter days of the summer. With temperatures being much cooler, and winter fast approaching to mark the end of yet another yearly lawn regeneration cycle, gardeners need make preparations before it starts again in the spring.
For lawn owners, lawn care is an extremely important part of giving all growing things the best chance of surviving the cold hard frosts and shorter, darker days of the winter. In order for lawn care to be successful, there are a few things to remember to do.
Firstly, it’s really important to free the lawns surface from the smattering of leaves and twigs that have fallen on windy days. Windy conditions may increase throughout the autumn and this can lead to an increase tree debris. Organic matter that’s left to fester on the lawn’s surface in wet conditions can cause serious damage to a lawn’s quality.
Scarification should then be achieved by raking using the proper tools that can either be purchased or hired from quality lawn care suppliers. The seemingly endless summer weeks of lawn mowing can leave most lawns with a layer of cut grass just above the soil known as ‘thatch’. Thatch creates a poor drainage problem, which can then lead to wet and waterlogged areas of soil that is subject to disease much more easily. Grass can also be prevented from forming properly.
Lastly, lawn care can help with drainage. Heavy footfall and use by children playing can cause compaction in a lawn. Aeration is a way to return the lawn to a good condition through a method called spiking. Using a garden fork, holes can be driven into the lawn during the autumn which can help increase its ability to drain water and get more air. Whilst it may seem like damage is being done to a lawn by doing this, lawn care involving spiking is highly efficient and recommended by all lawn care experts.
