how to write an error analysis for an experiment if you have way off data?
my data for equilibrium is way off and our prof told us to write error analysis. i just want to know what to actually write that results to my experimental errors?
I’ve had a lab or two over the years that produced data that was completely off the wall. The best advice when you get data that is far from the expected, or data that is just slightly off, is to analyze possible error sources. Look at the experiment from every angle and determine whether a slight misreading or mismeasurement would cause the experimental data to be “incorrect.”
I’ve found that it is best to approach error discussion with a qualitative point of view before you attempt to quantitate anything. Identify the sources of error I spoke of in the first paragraph and qualify them as significant error sources. Once you have found qualitatively that error sources may be present, then you can begin to quantify the error. Without knowing what experiment you did and what numbers you obtained, I cannot give you a great deal of information, but I think if you just look at the possible error sources in the experiment and then qualify and if possible, quantify them, you’ll be all right.
A professor of mine told me once that doing an experiment incorrectly but determining why it was done incorrectly and examining the error committed and obtained is just as beneficial as an experiment that has no error. It makes you think about what you did rather than methodically doing something and not thinking too in depth about it because all the number turned out “correct.”
