Error Obverse

I have a penny with an “x” stamped on the obverse if this a mint error or homemade?
I came across this penny with a large “X” stamped into it. Did the mint ever use to stamp error coins to be removed before being circulated or is this something someone has added?
Something added after it left the mint. Error coins that are caught at the mint are scrapped, sent off to be melted down and made into new coins.
