Morgan Dollar—how to keep it shiny and clean
Morgan Dollar—how to keep it shiny and clean
If you’re a collector of the Morgan Dollar, then one of the most valuable lessons to learn is how to clean it so it keeps it’s appeal and worth.
How do you take care of your investment in the Morgan Dollar you ask? How do you clean a Morgan Dollar? I’ll tell you that and more.
The Morgan Dollar is mainly composed of silver, and like silver jewelry or other silver coins (especially coin jewelry) there can sometimes be a brown or blackish layer that forms over the silver. This layer is due to the oxidation process that happens when silver comes in contact with airborne sulfur.
What can you do to protect your Morgan dollar from tarnishing like this? First, you can seal your Morgan Dollar to prevent it from happening. Or, like all silver coins, including Peace Dollars, American Silver Eagles and more, you can just clean them from time to time. Habitual cleaning is what more Morgan Dollar coin collectors do.
For most silver coins, a lemon juice solution can be used. To make the solution, simply dilute lemon juice with water and soak your Morgan Dollar in it for a few hours. The thickness of the tarnish will tell you how long you have to wait before you can finally clean the solution off of it with a soft brush. (Careful not to scratch your Morgan Dollar, as it will harm its value.) Rinse thoroughly and wipe dry with a cloth or tissue.
If your silver coin only has a few spots or blemishes, use warm vinegar or sour milk instead. Use a soft tissue or brush then rinse and wipe dry after.
Remember, some collectors like their coins to look old, so cleaning is not always recommended if you want to give your Morgan Dollar a hint of age.
