How does Gregory Crewdson afford to do million dollar stage set-ups in order to simply capture a photograph?

I am a big fan of Gregory Crewsdown. I am just looking for a little more insight on how he got to that point where he could have that kind of control and assistance to take photographs. Is it some sort of sponsorship? This is not exactly a major motion picture with many investors involved. That is why I’m so perplexed.

Crewdson’s images are of real scenes – they are not staged set-ups.

Yes, his production costs are significant – he has a crew that works for him (I suspect they are freelancers who are hired for each shoot and not on his payroll full time), and he may have to pay location and facilitation fees, but the buildings and other elements of his photographs are already there. I’ve photographed some of the same buildings, for example in downtown Pittsfield, MA.

The other half of his success, however, is that he charges high prices for his images.

The Best Of Alice Cooper: Mascara & Monsters

The Best Of Alice Cooper: Mascara & Monsters

An essential figure in any history of the American grotesque, son-of-a-preacher-man Vincent Furnier served as a missing link between Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and Marilyn Manson. As Alice Cooper, he helped make the pop world safe for morbidity and makeup, scoring a bunch of hits and misses along the way. Mascara & Monsters serves up a fairly rote chronology of Cooper’s ’70s singles, with the occasiona…

By 1958 “Tom Dooley” was already in circulation in the growing folk movement, but it was the Kingston Trio’s hit that ignited the boom. These three clean-cut Hawaii residents may not have looked like accomplished musicians, but they were. David Guard first learned the open-G Hawaiian guitar and took up the banjo after a Weaver’s concert; lead singer Bob Shane was much influenced by Harry Belefont…

Review for A Fistful of Dollars:A Fistful of Dollars launched the spaghetti Western and catapulted Clint Eastwood to stardom. Based on Akira Kurosawa’s 1961 samurai picture Yojimbo, it scored a resounding success (in Italy in 1964 and the U.S. in 1967), as did its sequels, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. The advertising campaign promoted Eastwood’s character–laconic, am…

$16.89

Sergio Leone’s trilogy of operatic spaghetti Westerns with Clint Eastwood made the former TV star into an international sensation as the scraggly, silent Man with No Name, a wandering rogue with a scheming mind and a sense of humor drier than the dusty, wind-scoured desert. With A Fistful of Dollars, a blatant rip-off of Kurosawa’s cynical samurai hit Yojimbo, Leone transforms the Western hero int…
