Best sausage roll in London (or the world)
For something that can really be bought for dime a dozen, this is one that reminds you why sausage rolls are so damn good. it really was that good – it was perfection in pastry. Read all about it on the fabulous London and Melbourne food blog, Delicious Days.
The Ginger Pig is a butchery stall at Borough Market, serving loads of sausages, including those of the gluten free variety, dry cured bacon (from free range porkers), and traditional cuts of mutton, lamb, beef et al. If you do a quick google search, you will find that they have been recommended by just around everyone in food journalism by the London papers, and interviews with Ginger Pig man about town, Tim Wilson.
But. I have not yet indulged in the main attraction – ie, the meat – I was looking for a pie, but saw that they had some sausage rolls hot and ready to roll.
It was amazing.
The meat, was juicy and deep, the pastry was flaky, and the flakes were buttery soft, and there was the most gorgeous, syrupy, caramelised juices that had run to the bottom, seeping out the fold of the pastry where it folded across.
Some sausage rolls, when you bite in, you get shards of pastry that jab into the roof of the mouth, causing coughing fits in public places, but this – this is what pastry should be all about. Evenly tanned across the top, smooth and basted with love – i mean butter – and hot through, it wasn’t something you’d find at Tesco, or even Waitrose on pay day. No.
And the sausage meat, the good stuff, was finely ground- no gristle in this baby. It was, I am unafraid to proclaim, the best sausage roll I have ever had. ever. Even better than the ones I made for my 23rd birthday that featured blue food colouring and soy sauce.
