What metals are used to make the penny, nickel, dime, and quarter.?
And how come only pennies tarnish/change color?
As others have pointed out, the cent is the only one of the four coins with a pure copper coating on the outside, and copper tends to turn brown as it’s handled.
The nickel is an alloy of 75% copper, and 25% nickel.
The dime and quarter (and the half dollar), have that same 75/25 alloy in their outer layers (each of which is about a third the thickness of the coin), while the core is made out of pure copper. Taken as a whole, the dime, quarter and half dollar are each 91.67% copper, 8.33% nickel.
The three layers are “explosively bonded” together, and it’s exactly what it sounds like.
None of our currently circulating coins has any silver in it, and the “88% copper, 12% nickel” composition for the cent stopped being used in 1864
