Dime Denver

Dime Denver
i have a dime with an error on it?

i know it is struck on the wrong planchet.. it is a 1948 dime with a denver mentmark but it is the same size as a penny.. it is just confusing because it looks like it is silver like it should be and it has the edge that a dime should have.. i don’t see any traces of where a penny was struck so i’m just lookin for some info on this

It needs to be seen but it could be what is called a “Broadstrike” which is a coin struck outside the collar. When coins are struck without being contained by the collar die, they spread out larger than normal, however they will have a plain edge. You state yours has a reeded edge, in that case the coin may have been manipulated outside the mint. A cent planchet can not go through a dime minting press for it would not fit the collar system. A dime planchet can go through the cent system but not the other way around. Best bet take it to a couple of coin dealers or see if there is a coin club in your area for they would be glad to help you. It really needs to be seen.
