Dime Better

Dime Better
Has anyone ever heard of adding a dime to their blackeye peas for added good luck?

Yes Susan,
I have heard of adding a coin (usually a dime) to a pot of black-eyed peas (or “Hoppin John”). The idea is whoever gets the coin in their portion will have an even luckier (more prosperous) year ahead.

Black-eyed peas are for luck or as the saying goes, “Eat poor that day, eat rich the rest of the year. Rice for riches and peas for peace.”

As I said, I have read about the coin tradition and that it is mainly a tradition of a few areas of the south (USA), but I have never met or heard from any southern friends who actually practice it. – “This African-American dish is traditionally a high point of New Year’s Day, when a shiny dime is often buried among the black-eyed peas before serving. whoever get the coin in his or her portion is assured good luck throughout the year.” ( http://www.whatscookingamerica.net/History/HoppinJohn.htm )
