Minnesota State University , Moorhead is located in Moorhead , Minnesota . It is a four-year public university with an enrollment of nearly 7500 students and 337 full-time faculties. MSUM is a part of Minnesota State Colleges and University system, which has other colleges and university under its system. Located on the western border of Minnesota on the Red River if the North in Moorhead ; across the river lies Fargo , North Dakota . The region has a combine population of more than 160,000. Sports teams of the university are called Dragons. History at a Glance The State Legislature laid plans for setting up MSUM as early as 1885 by passing a bill declaring a need for normal state school in the Red River Valley region having an eye on Moorhead . The State Senator Solomon Comstock proposed the bill and donated six acres and funds that went to form the campus. The campus opened in 1888. In 1921, it became Moorhead State Teachers College when four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Education was authorized. During Second World War, Army Air Corps and MUSM had a contract and MUSM trained aviation students. After the World War, enrollment reached a figure of 700. School diversified and broadened into both liberal arts and professional curriculum. Bachelor of Arts degree started in 1946 and graduate programs in 1953. In 1957, name was changed to Moorhead State College. The school joined co-operative cross-registration forming Tri-College University with the neighboring schools Concordia College and North Dakota State College. In 1975, the State Legislature permitted changing of name to Moorhead State University . July 1 2000 marks the date when the school was officially named Minnesota State University Moorhead. The Different Programs Available Minnesota State University boasts of academic programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The College of Business & Industry, the College of Education & Human Services, the College of Social & Natural Sciences, and the College of Arts & Humanities constitute the four colleges of the university. Accounting, American studies, art, business administration, chemistry, East Asian studies, geosciences, legal studies, medical technology, music industry, education, nursing, and theatre arts are some of the bachelor’s degree courses of the university. In several areas of education and e-business, university awards undergraduate certificates. Dual degree program allows students to receive B.Sc. degree in Engineering and a B.S. in either physics or chemistry from MSUM. University also offers master’s level in counseling and student affairs, creative writing, music, liberal arts, nursing, educational leadership, curriculum & instruction, school psychology, special education, speech-language pathology, and Public, Human Service & Health administration. The college of Education offers Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) degree in school psychology and in educational administration. The Mission Its mission statement says in part, “the University strives to provide an educational environment that supports intellectual development that welcomes diversity and that develops the skills and talents of women and men so that they have the capacity to live usefully, act responsibly and be learners all their lives.”
