Coronet Head

Coronet Head
What advertising jingles can you remember?

My head is stuffed with stupid advertising jingles that I can still sing word perfect, quite a lot of years after they were last on TV. Remember Rosemary Clooney singing “Extra value is what you get, when you buy Coronet”? Anybody else have a head stuffed full of useless advertising?

I remember the “Coke Song,” as we called it, very well ’cause it was my junior high school graduation song. Of course, we did the version that was later recorded as a single, without the references to Coca-Cola in it.

The song starts out: “I’d like to build the world a home and furnish it with love/Grow apple trees and honey bees and snow white turtle doves….” Seems rather innocent. But it was a bad idea that our 8th grade music teacher had, asking a bunch of young teenagers to sing that song properly.

Poor Miss MacEvoy! As much as she threatened, coaxed, and cajoled, she was unable to stop the entire 8th grade class of Elias Bernstein Junior High School No. 7 from gleefully and enthusiastically shouting out, “I’d like to build the world a home and furni -SH IT with love!” — much to the chagrin of the gathered administrators and parents! We felt SO powerful! (And it was so silly, but after all these years it still makes me smile!)

I was pretty sure that this song was a commercial jingle first, and the song came after, so I Googled it. This website came up with the whole history of the creation of the commercial and then the subsequent song. I thought it was quite interesting:

… and here are the song lyrics:

New Seekers
I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing lyrics I’d like to build the world a home
and furnish it with love
grow apple trees and honey bees
and snow white turtle doves

I’d like to teach the world to sing
in perfect harmony
I’d like to hold it in my arms
and keep it company

I’d like to see the world for once
all standing hand in hand
and hear them echo through the hills
for peace throuout the land

thats the song I hear
Let the world sing today
a song of peace
that echoes on
and never goes away

I’d like to teach the world to sing
in perfect harmony

I’d like to teach the world to sing
in perfect harmony

I’d like to build the world a home
and funish it with love
grow apple trees and honey bees
and snow white turtle doves

I’d like to teach the world to sing
in perfect harmony
I’d like to hold it in my arms
and keep it company

…and all this reminded me of “the Camera Song.” Remember that one? It was a Kodak commercial first, I think. Paul Anka wrote the words to it, and it became a hit, too. Do you remember… the times of your life?”

TIMES OF YOUR LIFE
Paul Anka

Good morning yesterday,
You wake up, and time has slipped away
And suddenly it’s hard to find
The memories you left behind
Remember, do you remember?

The laughter and the tears,
The shadows of misty yesteryears,
The good times and the bad you’ve seen,
And all the others in between
Remember, do you remember the times of your life?

(Do you remember?)

Reach out for the joy and the sorrow,
Put them away in your mind
The mem’ries are time that you borrow
To spend when you get to tomorrow

Here comes the setting sun (comes the setting sun)
The seasons are passing one by one
So gather moments while you may,
Collect the dreams you dream today
Remember, will you remember the times of your life?

(Instrumental Bridge 4 bars)

Gather moments while you may,
Collect the dreams you dream today
Remember, will you remember the times of your life?
Of your life, of your life…

This was a great question! I enjoyed answering it a lot—brought back a lot of good memories. But now I’m gonna be singing this song for the rest of the night!
