How much is an 1886 silver dollar worth in today’s time?
Also how much is a 1936 and 1937 buffalo coin worth and how much is a 1942 copper wheat penny worth?
With all these coins, it’s going to depend on the condition.
With the silver dollar, it’s also going to depend on what mint it was made at. On the reverse of the coin, right above the “DOL” in “DOLLAR” you may find a small letter that serves as the mintmark. If there is no letter, it was made in Philadelphia, if there is an “O”, it was minted in New Orleans, and if there is an “S”, it was minted in San Francisco.
For Philadelphia coins, if it’s worn so much that the portrait is basically a flat outline with very few details left (what coin collectors would call “Good”), its worth it’s silver value, which is right around $20. If it’s worn about like the average coin you’d find in change (which would be about “Very Fine”) it might bring you a couple of extra dollars over the silver value, and if it has no wear on it (which is called “uncirculated”), it might bring you $25-$30.
If it’s from New Orleans, figure about the same price for “good”, around $30 for “very fine”, and several hundred dollar for an uncirculated coin. It’s what is known as a “condition rarity”–the coin itself is fairly common, but there aren’t very many floating around that are uncirculated.
If it’s from San Francisco, you could probably get around $30 for a “good”, $60 for a “very fine”, and $150-$200 for an uncirculated.
The nickels are pretty common–they’d probably bring a couple of dollars in “good”, maybe $4-$5 in “very fine, and $15 and up if they’re uncirculated.
The one exception on the nickels is if you’ve got a 1937-D “three legged buffalo”. It was an error minted in Denver (if there’s a mintmark, it’s under the “five cents” on the reverse), and it happened when one of the reverse dies was being polished. It was polished to the point that one of the buffalo’s legs was polished off the die, so any coins struck after that look like the buffalo only has three legs. If you think you’ve got one of those, you’re best bet would be to take it to a coin dealer, and ask about getting it “certified”. It gets sent off to a company that authenticates the coin, grades it, and puts it in a tamper-resistant holder.
The cent is going to be less than a dollar, unless it’s uncirculated, in which case it might bring you a couple of dollars.
