Why does an oxidised copper coin turn pink when placed in hydrochloric acid?

Oxidised copper which is brown coloured turns pink when placed in hydrochloric acid. Why is this so? What is the brownish thing on the surface of the copper coin. Why is it there? Why does it disappear?

The brownish layer is a very thin oxicdized layer. If you throw a penny into hydrochloric acid, the oxice dissoves leaving a fresh copper surface. As to the pink (or other color variations), the oxide is not smooth and the new surface agter removing the oxide has a microtexture that does funny things with light.
