How to remove pinkish stains from silver?
I soaked some old wheat pennies in vinegar to clean them up and didn’t realize there were silver coins mixed in – now the silver coins are stained a pinkish color. Is there anything that will take pink off the silver coins? Thanks!
Probably not–the reason the silver coins are pink is because the vinegar removed a thin layer of copper from the cents, and electrochemically deposited it on the silver. In fact, if you hooked up a wire to the cents, and a wire to the silver, you would have a crude battery.
Anything you could do at this point would just make things worse.
Please tell me that these were just some common coins, and not something with any numismatic value. If they were collectible items, putting them in vinegar (or doing any other sort of cleaning) absolutely kills any collector value. Collectors hate (and I do mean hate) cleaned coins.
