Coin Uncirculated

Coin Uncirculated
What is the difference between an uncirculated coin and a proof coin?

I know the process in making them is different, but as far as the finished product goes, are there any differences that the naked eye can see?

Yes, it’s easy to tell the difference.

For proof coins, the coin blanks are highly polished, while the proof dies are sandblasted, and then the “fields” on the die are highly polished. This causes the raised “devices” to appear frosty, while the fields of the coin are mirror like. Here’s an example http://www.casperscoins.com/ecommerce/dynamic/images/lg_1991-clad-proof-dime.jpg The fields look black because they’re reflecting light away from the camera.

Proof coins are also struck at higher pressure, and are usually struck at least twice. This helps guarantee that all of the detail will appear on the coin.

An uncirculated coin is simply one that has no wear on it. It may come from a government made set, it may come from a roll of coins, it can even come to you in change–it just has to have no wear.

While the mint now takes better care with the coins in their “uncirculated sets”, they used to be just regular coins they picked off the line. The result was that you’d get some incredibly baggy coins sometimes, but that’s not the case any more. Depending on the amount of wear on the die, an uncirculated coin can have very soft to very heavy “mint luster”, which is caused by microscopic irregularities in the surface. Here’s an example with very nice luster http://thumbs4.ebaystatic.com/m/mma-U9vEnxASnwTVIRePvjQ/140.jpg
