Organize Large Coin Collection?
I have about 2 1/2 large trunks filled to the top with old coins collected over years. I need a away to create a log to organize the collection (mostly I need the headings for the spreadd sheet), also a convenient way to keep each individual coin. Any help is apreciated
I keep a few different spreadsheets, because I have US coins, US currency, foreign coins, and foreign currency. Some of the countries I separate into their own sheets as well, if I have enough coins/notes for it. That is really up to you.
In my spreadsheet, I have columns for My US coins:
Denomination
Date
Mint
- Which US mint produced the coin
Grade or Condition
- My opinion of what the coin’s overall condition
Value
-I use the Red Book value – http://coins.about.com/od/coinvalues/fr/redbook.htm as my standard, but this will give you at least a ballpark estimate of what each coin is worth.
Price Paid
– Always a good idea to track what you bought the coin for, even if it was a circulation find or a gift from someone else.
For my generic foreign listings, I add the column ‘Country’ as well.
As for keeping them, it depends on how you want to display them. A few options:
1) Whitman Coin folders – I use these for inexpensive collections where the coins individual value isn’t much more than a few dollars. These are cheap and hold a fair number of coins. They can be bought a book stores or on-line fairly easily. There are folders for most US coins.
2) 2″x2″ cardboard holders – Also called Flips. These allow each coin to be set into its own holder with the ability to see both sides of the coins. They come in different sizes and are more expensive/coin to use. They can be placed into clear vinal pages and stored as a binder, or stacked and stored in boxes if you wish I try and avoid using these on coins that are only worth a few cents. Coin dealers or on-line sites tend to have these types of holders.
