Clad Dime

When did silver (pre-1965) coins disappear from circulation. Im curious, i wasn’t born during that era.?
Did silver coins (dimes, quarters, half dollars) go away instantly the moment clad coins came out? Did silver coins remain in circulation for a few more years ie: 1966, 67, 68, 69? Im curious, i collected coins for nearly 12 years. I wasn’t born during the 60′s or even 70′s. I just want to know
Silver coins did disappear from circulation almost right away as people hoarded them. For a year or two you might spot one about as often as you see a wheatie penny now, but they were instantly very scarce.
One of the most popular coins throughout American history had been the half dollar. Few people liked the dollar – it was heavy and represented a day’s pay until inflation set in. Bags of one thousand uncirculated Morgan dollars sat in banks, some until the GSA sold the choice ones in the 1970s. (GSA provenance still commands a nice market premium). Bags of one thousand silver dollars were the principal means of transferring wealth between banks before the modern era. Savvy coin dealers were buying these bags at face in the early 1960s. So for a popular circulating coin, people liked the half. When Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963 the mint hurriedly replaced Franklin (who had been on the half only fifteen years) with Kennedy. Everyone knew the clad coins were coming, and this was the last year of 90% silver coins, and the first year of the Kennedys (1964), so everybody saved the new Kennedys, as well as hoarding the Franklins and any Walkers they might see. The half literally disappeared from circulation in 1964 and has never come back. Cash registers used to have a change space for halves, but no more. I remember seeing a few silver coins in 1965, which we kept.
