Circulated State

How many signatures should I aim for to make a difference with my petition to the state?
I am circulating a petition for Maine to join other states in allowing men to take their wives’ names in marriage without jumping through hoops. What is a good number of signatures to receive before I send it to Governor Baldacci?
If you are interested in reading or signing this petition and you are a resident of the state of Maine, the address is http://www.PetitionOnline.com/ub67gde1/petition.html
You should contact Gov. Baldacci’s office or the Secretary of State’s office in Maine. I don’t live in your state so I would begin w/ these websites:
http://www.maine.gov/governor/baldacci/index.shtml
http://www.state.me.us/
Your effort would seem more aimed at a state referendum instead of direct action from the Governor. But I don’t know Maine’s laws. Check the above websites. You DEFINITELY should plan on at the very minimum, at least 10,000 valid signatures. Good luck! And don’t give up!
