TO BE A Personal trainer what certification organization should I get certified under?
I am 15 right now, but I am considering becoming a Personal Trainer during college. The requirements under the AFPA is: You have to be at least 18 and have a highschool diploma. I do excellent in school and would love to have this kind of career. I am very physically fit, a martial artist with a nice body and face and great with people. Is this kind of job demanding and do they pay well? MOST OF ALL though, where should I get the best certification? I was looking at the AFPA and they seem pretty good. Another reputable organization that offers Personal Trainer Certification is ACE – American Council on Exercise: www.acefitness.org.
To find out more about the field itself (pay, pros and cons, etc.) go to the “Find a Professional” on the site and see if there are any trainers in your area. Drop them a note and see if they would be willing to talk with you about what they do. They would be some of the best resources about the field of personal training!
Another resource would be to contact your local YMCA or YWCA and ask if they have any certified personal trainers on staff. They might have suggestions of other certifying organizations too.
I received my personal trainer certification through the YMCA — they paid for the training, which was nice. The downfall — I am not certified to work outside of the YMCA setting. Since I work in another profession full-time and do personal training to supplement my income, that’s ok. Someday I might consider “biting the bullet” and obtaining a national certification.
