Earning Your Degree Online Is Easier With Utah-Based Financial Aid
The extreme conservatism of Utah has created an interesting situation when it comes to financial aid. While the state does have some grants out there for its local residents, it’s more open to academic scholarships as opposed to need-based awards. There are some, but nowhere near as many as, say, its neighbor Colorado. When it comes to grants many colleges in Utah, you should contact the federal government for help. They are funded through the Leveraged Educational Assistance Program (LEAP) program. If the school does accept you, the LEAP has been known to hand out as much as $2,500 annually, but last year the average was $450.
Utah itself has the Centennial Opportunity Program for Education (UCOPE). It too requires being enrolled at a university, a record of one’s grade, and a financial statement. It is a little more generous, providing up to $5,000 a year. At the same time, it averages $550 a year.
One of the more specialized programs is the Utah Educationally Disadvantaged Program. This plan is open to students who are blind, hearing impaired, or similarly physically handicapped. They must demonstrate true financial need for this grant and must also demonstrate “satisfactory” progress in order to renew. The amount of the waiver varies, but it can go up to full tuition. Probably the most generous of the plans is the TH Bell Teaching Incentive Loan. This is due to the state’s extreme shortage of educators of all stripes. In this case, Utah will loan an education major whatever he or she needs to get a degree and teaching certificate. In turn, upon graduation, the student can end up with the loan completely forgiven provided he or she teaches at an under-served educational district for a predetermined number of years. Usually after four to 10 years, the loan is completely paid.

For example, there is the Horatio Alger Utah Program. To qualify, a student needs a minimum 2.0 grade average, letters of recommendation, and proof of financial need. The most critical element is the completion of an essay explaining how you overcame some obstacle in your life. If accepted, the award can be as high as $5,000.
It is probably a good idea to be on the hunt for financial assistance from other sources. Private societies such as the American Legion are quite capable of throwing in an additional $500 if you know of one or, even better, if you have a family member who’s a member.
