If I buy a 12 cent small common goldfish.. can I put it with my betta and see if it will do good with others?
I want to start a big community tank but not sure if my betta will cooroporate.. i’m thinking if I buy a small goldfish and leave it in for a day or so I will be able to tell how the betta acts and if it will be good with other fish.. or is there a way to tell by its behavior by itself?
dude I read on the net not all bettas are killers and stuff like that, im not worried about the goldfish i wanna see if it is agressive or not.. i know you dont mix bettas but go on any betta site and it will say there are betta tankmates for bettas .. infact my brother had a betta with other fish and it was scared so
I know that freshwater clams, ghost shrimp, and snails can go with bettas…

the goldfish was an example I would not mix that trash with my betta.. I wanna know if I put common fish with my betta, like cory cats, will they get along
I don’t think a goldfish is your best bet for testing your betta’s sociability, unless you choose one that has very short fins. Bettas CAN be good community fish, but not with fish with long, flowing fins, as those are usually mistaken by the betta as another male betta. Besides, goldfish are just so different from your standard community fish…
I would use a single fish of one of the types you’re planning on mixing the betta with in the community tank (neons, rasboras, livebearers… no gouramis, other bettas, or nippers like danios/barbs/large tetras lest your betta become the target) and make sure that fish has plenty of room and/or plants to hide in if the betta is aggressive. And keep an eye on them so you can remove the fish if your betta is indeed a mean one.
