Newton’s coin trick. need help understanding the acting forces. please help?
can someone please explain in a very primitive and easy to understnd way, what is happening with this trick?
Newtons Coin Trick:
place plastic cup on table
place peice of cardboard on top of cup
place coin (eg. $1) on top of the cardboard
give the edge of the carboard a quick sharp flick
cardboard shoots off cup, but coin falls into the cup.
which forces (eg. gravity) are acting in this trick?
why did this happen? (coin falling into cup and cardboard not)

The applied force of the flick causes the cardboard to move laterally. There is little friction between the cardboard and the coin so little lateral force is applied to the coin, and it moves only slightly. When the cardboard is no longer present, the coin, under the influence of gravity, falls into the cup.
