How To Research Your Family Tree And Find Your Birth Parents

Of all the emotional processes you go through when studying and researching your family tree it is the hunt for birth parents that is the most challenging. Different areas have different laws but pricacy rules can make it hard to find out exact names and details. Difficulties may arise simply trying to find out locations from any adoptive agency. You may have trouble if your birth parents don't want to be found and this is often the case. The process can be difficult so you should be prepared for it all to take a long time.

The first thing to do is to ask your adoptive parents what they know about your birth family. They may feel rejected that you are searching. So you should try to be sensitive when approaching them for information. Explaining that you wish to find the roots of your genealogy and this is not some sort of rejection of their love and affection should go some way to reassure them they have nothing to fear. Explain that finding your birth parents is in no way replacing your real family. If you can get a forename for your birth mother then you are doing better than most. The adoption ageny could be the only thing they even knew anything about. Finding information from overseas adoption agencies is likely to make things a lot harder for you. There are some adoptions that are a lot more open than others and your parents may have had some contact with the birth mother. If they can give you any descriptive details about your mother's age or looks it could help you in your search but they may not know her name.

Check out the laws surrounding adoption in your state and country. It may be worth your while to invest in professional help to assist with understanding the laws. You must always abide by the law so make sure you stick to the rules. You may find some agencies who can help you and they are often to be found online. Having some legal advice can be invaluable in your search. If you go on the internet you should find some adoption reunions and it might assist you to sign up for some of these. If you are really lucky you may find your birth mother who has been searching for you as well, for years.

Finally you might get the chance to approach the people at the agency who dealt with your own adoption. They may or may not be able to help you but you should always ask. They may be prepared to pass on a letter you write to your birth mother. In your letter you would explain you want help to research your birth family tree. The adoption agency may also be able to tell you about your mother's medical records, if nothing else, so that you can be aware of your family's health history.

Don’t give up even if it all seems very difficult. If you can find out her name you can at least build up your family tree even if you never find her. Your birth father will probably be even harder to find. You could always research the family tree of your adoptive family if you come up against a complete brick wall when it comes to researching your birth parents. They loved you and they raised you and gave you their family name.
