I am looking for a module for a door bell that is surface mounted and has line out (rca) for a stereo connect?
I started writing out something and realized it was getting quite difficult, but then at that point, I came up with something… I don’t konw of any module that is pre-made for this, however, I have a solution if you don’t mind getting your hands a little dirty. This should be fun, but it’s going to require some hands-on labor on your part. First, go to http://www.musicaldoorbell.com/ and purchase one of these contraptions. You can use any of the songs it comes with and even program your own. It’s a pretty cool little deal. Next (to get the RCA outs), you’ll have to take it apart and look to see how it connects the speaker on the unit to the actual circuitry inside. You will have to detach the wires from the speaker and note which speaker wire is positive and which one is negative. Usually the red is positive and the black one or the one that is red with a black stripe is negative. You will have to purchase an RCA cable from someplace like Radio Shack. You don’t need the red/white/yellow RCA cables, just one single RCA cable will be fine. You’re hooking up a mono speaker, so making it stereo is somewhat pointless because it won’t be true stereo. Keep in mind that an RCA cable’s negative and positive are this: the prong thing in the middle is usually used for carrying the negative signal and the outer wires are used for carrying the positive signal. Cut the connector off of one end of your RCA cable as you will not be needing this. Next, cut back the sheath on the RCA cable exposing both the inner and outer cables (inner=negative outer=positive). Gather up the cables from the negative and twist them together being careful not to twist any of the positive cables into the mix. Do the same with the positive cables. Now, here comes the part where you can get as technical as you want, you can either use electrical tape (not recommended) to hold the wires from the doorbell to the wires for the RCA cable, get butt connectors or twist connectors available at Radio Shack as well, or use a soldering iron (most recommended). If you’re not handy with a soldering iron, I’d suggest using twist connectors, they’re the easiest and most sturdy. Using any of the methods above, connect the positive wire from the doorbell circuitry to the now twisted up wires of the RCA cable. Do the same for the negative. Now that they’re connected together, find some way to make the whole thing look good by maybe having the RCA go through a side of the doorbell box that doesn’t have anything else on it and doesn’t have a screw or something to go through your cable. Put it all back together and hook it up to your stereo. It may be very loud, so you’ll have to play around with the volume, but off the top of my head, this seems like the most fun and best idea. I haven’t tested it or even tried this, but I’m about 95% sure this will work just fine. Have fun!
