Beautiful Color
I recently discovered that the beautiful color pictures of Mars are originally filmed in black and white. Why?
So I started wondering. Are all the color pictures of nebulae, galaxies and other planets color treated from black and white also? Again, how come?
Jordan is incorrect. The amount of data in an image has much more to do with the resolution of the image than its color property.
The Mars probes do take black and white pictures, but they are taken through color filters. For instance, Phoenix has a set of 8 colored filters. It’s bit complicated, but taking B&W images through a color filter allows us to do crude spectroscopic analysis of the images which can’t be done with normal color images.
By analyzing how much light gets through each color of filter, we can make good guesses as to the composition of what we’re looking at. Perhaps you’ve seen some of the “false color” images which are produced as a result, and which highlight different features of the rocks and soil. You just couldn’t do that with a normal color camera.
In the end, because of the color filters, we can work backward and produce an image that approximates the real color of the scene, though it is difficult to get an exact match. That’s just the way it goes, and there is good scientific reason for the B&W cameras. Adding a color camera for real-color images would be almost redundant and not serve any scientific value…an important consideration when the weight and size of everything you put on the probe must be considered for maximum science return.
In fact, and opposed to the first two answers, it requires much MORE data to be sent to take 8 high-resolution images of an object than to take just one image.
