The Beatles 2009 Stereo CD Box Set

The Beatles in Stereo Box Set was made available in September it instantly became the ultimate standard for The Beatles discography. These stereo versions sound far better than the old CDs from the late 80s. When one compares the remastered CDs to the old CDs it’s like the old discs are under a pile of wet towels while the new CDs sound warm and clear so that all of the vocals, guitar parts, bass guitar parts, and drums punch through the mix like never before.

The Beatles Stereo Remastered CD Set isn’t the only Beatles box set that came out in September of ’09 but it is the most popular since it can be appreciated by the widest range of Beatles fans. The Beatles Mono Box Set is excellent too but it appeals more to purists who need to listen to the mono mixes (and compare them to the stereo mixes) than to the average classic rock fan. Although there are definitely songs that sound better in mono than in stereo (particularly quite a few of the pre Peper songs in my opinion) overall I think the stereo CD set does sound most fab.

The fantastic thing about The Beatles Remastered Stereo Box Set is that it allows you to buy The Beatles entire ’62-’70 discography with just one order and considering the extremely high quality of almost all of their albums, it makes sense to purchase them all at one time rather than purchasing some and going back for the rest later.

Along with the wonderful songs included in this box set there are some groovy visual parts, most obviously the DVD with 13 mini documentaries on it (one for each studio album.) Along with the mini documentary DVD there are extended liner notes for each album (there’s some good information in these notes, especially for fans who are new to the group) and some interesting previously unpublished pictures.

I am such a big Beatles lover that I’ve bought (or am planning on ordering) The Beatles in Stereo Box Set, The Beatles Mono Box, The Beatles Apple USB Flash Drive, and The Beatles Rock Band Video Game. But if I had to pick only one of these things, it would have to be the comprehensive stereo set because it’s the best representation of The Beatles music and of course, it’s the influential albums that made them the most legendary band of all time.

Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever [VHS]

$19.98

From Wikipedia: Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever was a 1983 television special produced by Suzanne de Passe for Motown Records, to commemorate Motown’s twenty-fifth year of existence. (Motown was founded in January 1959, meaning that a twenty-fifth anniversary special should have aired in 1984, not 1983. One could argue that Gordy’s vision of what would become “Hitsville U.S.A.” was conceived …

Snow Patrol are frequently compared to Coldplay in the press, which seems strange as they write far better songs and do not appear to be quite so self-hating, nor as rich. Their delightfully dour little pop songs do touch on the melancholic side of things, but the lyrics are wonderfully slice-of-life descriptions. Singer/lyricist Gary Lightbody gives a shout-out to Sufjan Stevens when on the punch…
